Karen Bird Ngale

Born in 1984, Karen Bird Ngale is the youngest daughter of Lindsay Bird Mpetyane—prominent Utopian artist and senior elder for Ilkawerne country. Karen grew up in Angkula, a small outstation in southern Utopia. There Karen attended Mulga Bore primary school, and later at Yirrara College in Alice Springs. She resides at Akaye Soakage in the Utopia Region of Central Australia and is the younger sister to fellow Utopian artists Rosie and Jessie Bird.
As per tradition, the younger women are taught the stories, songs, and dances associated with ceremonies by the senior women. Through this Karen, along her two sisters, would learn the themes they are allowed to paint. One of Karen’s main Dreamtime stories is the Alpar (Rattail plant) Seed Story, which is an important Dreamtime story for women. The plant seeds were collected by women, soaked in water then dried and ground into a flour like substance. It was also used medicinally and as a food.
The themes for Karen’s paintings include Ahakey (Bush Plum), Tyankern (Mulga Seed), and the mentioned Aplar (Rattail plant). Karen’s work reflects the designs associated with the many stories surrounding these plants. Karen also paints Awelye (women’s ceremonial body paint designs).
